“Stunning location. Very private and peaceful. Beautiful sounds of the water lapping. So pleasant to sit on the deck watch all boats going in and out. Very close to the town centre if you have transport…5mins. The Chalet was very well equipped with everything you could need. Super comfy beds. Good quality linen. Plunge pool and spa available. Host was very friendly, helpful and made us feel very welcome. We will definitely return.”
Our accommodation manager lives on site and is happy to assist with any aspects of your stay.

Lakeside Comfort and Scenic Views
From your chalet’s deck at The Retreat, you can take in uninterrupted views across Lake Taupō’s glassy surface, watching boats glide past the marina as the surrounding hills slowly brighten with the soft glow of morning light. With the changing seasons, you’re treated to beautiful scenes of nature in flux, from lush green slopes in the summer, to golden foliage in autumn, to crisp air and snow-dusted peaks in winter.
Witness these stunning views from the comfort of your lakeside retreat, whether with your partner or with friends and family. With private lake access, you can make your getaway even more special by sharing a warm drink outdoors or enjoying conversation in the evening as the sun slowly sets. These quiet moments shared against a beautiful backdrop can set the mood for a relaxed chalet getaway or serve as a break from more adventures in the Lake Taupō area.
Adventures on the Water
As New Zealand’s largest lake, Lake Taupō offers an abundance of ways to enjoy nature’s splendour. From the chalet’s grounds, guests can step straight onto the water for a paddleboarding or kayaking session along sheltered coves. Alternatively, you can head to Acacia Bay, a sheltered spot just a quick drive away, perfect for swimming and having a picnic, or simply enjoying calm waterside walks. But if you’re looking for a full day of adventure, head to Tongariro National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its dramatic volcanic landscapes and alpine trails. In winter, the park’s Whakapapa ski area becomes a playground for snow sports, accessible for all skill levels.
On the other hand, you might prefer a quieter type of adventure. In that case, spending a day fishing could be the highlight of your lakeside chalet stay. Whether you join a helicopter charter or try your luck catching trout from the shoreline, fishing at Lake Taupō is as much about the peaceful setting as the catch.
Exploring Lake Taupo’s Natural Wonders
Beyond the lake, the Taupō region brings yet more breathtaking landscapes and natural spectacles. A short drive from The Retreat leads to Huka Falls, where you’ll find the Waikato River, New Zealand’s longest river. Another attraction to explore is the Craters of the Moon geothermal area, where you can marvel at fascinating steam vents and bubbling mud pools.
If you’re up for a more restorative experience, unwind at the Wairakei Terraces with its soothing thermal pools drawn from silica terraces and geothermal water underground. These hot springs are a sanctuary for those who want calm and relief after a day of sightseeing or adventure. All of these destinations are within easy reach, allowing guests to enjoy the natural diversity of the region with no worries about getting back to the comfort of their lakeside chalet.
Evenings to Cherish
As the sun sets, Lake Taupō takes on a different kind of charm. If you enjoy cooking, you can take advantage of the chalet’s full-size kitchen and prepare a special dinner for a loved one or the group. Optionally, you could set up a BBQ on the outdoor deck just before sundown to enjoy this pastime amid striking views. Otherwise, you might choose to enjoy dinner in nearby Taupō township, where a variety of restaurants and cafés offer both casual and fine dining options. After dinner, why not visit a local geothermal spa for a warm soak under the night sky, or simply enjoy the chalet’s spa services?
