Plenty! Visit the geothermal hot pools at Taupō DeBretts or Wairakei Terraces. They’re even better when it’s raining. The AC Baths offer indoor swimming. For something different, explore the Taupō Museum or browse the local shops and cafés in town.
Huka Falls is a must-see, and it’s completely free. The Spa Thermal Park is another free attraction you shouldn’t miss. Though arrive early on weekends to beat the crowds. Walking the lakefront promenade and visiting the Aratiatia Dam (to watch the gates open) are also free.
The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is a challenging 19.4 km hike taking 7–8 hours. It requires a good level of fitness and proper hiking gear. For a shorter alternative, consider the Taranaki Falls walk (2 hours return) in the same park, which is suitable for most fitness levels.
Lake swimming at Acacia Bay, the Taupō DeBretts water park, or a scenic lake cruise to see the Māori Rock Carvings are all family-friendly options. The Huka Prawn Park also offers feeding tours and fishing that kids enjoy.
